The Eggman

Ivo Robotnik (aka Eggman) is one of the smartest minds in the world, there isn't much debate (sorry Tails, we focusing on Robotnik). So is it all that suprising that his grandfather Gerald Robotnik held the same standing decades prior? Gerald shaped the world having designed not only Space Colony Ark (the 9th wonder of the world), but its accompanying Eclipse cannon. He was quite the anthropologist having discovered Angel Island alongside the exsitence of the master emerald (wonder who was guarding the master emerald at the time, this was pre-Knuckles), and of course it's mural (super sonic mural). Who later created the Biolizard and Shadow the Hedgehog, two iterations of the ultimate lifeform. Looking at this I say its rather interesting how Eggman, a man who's seemingly uninterested in such a thing as family still found himself practically walking in his grandfather's footsteps. Traveling to and discovering the same islands along side both the chaos emeralds and master emerald, all prior to him obtaining his grandfather's journal. With his journal in tow he beings to unknowingly carry out his grandfather's last will and testament. He is shaped by and bounded to his family even though he'll rarely if ever admit it.

I think something that movie Eggman potentially shows us about game Eggman is that he isn't that close to his family, movie Eggman doesn't even know of them. That's why he conjoins himself to his grandfather so quickly, he's his only relation, and the only person that understands him in a way no one else has (it helps that they're both evil geniuses). I think this carries over to game Eggman, in SA2 we become aware of his late grandfather Gerald Robotnik. We learn that Eggman has obtained his personal journal and inturn learns of his grandfather's work with G.U.N. (which incites the opening events of the game where he frees Shadow. He knows of some great weapon or item his grandfather left behind, but not the details) but outside of him he doensn't mention family. In the case of game Eggman he's aware of his family, but they seemingly don't care for him or have neglected him. Not cause the things he's done as Eggman (although I imagine that doensn't help) but because . . . idk, we dk. But then sonic frontiers dropped, and frontiers gave us Egg memos from his time on the Starfall islands. Egg memo 17 is the only memo where he mentions his greater family beyond his grandfather, effectively lamenting that he was overlooked by his family due to everything around Maria. So safe to assume this left him uninterested in family ("luckly" this changes for him with Sage's existence as he mentions in memo 17, effectively sympathizing with his grandfather's feelings). Yet still after the events of SA2 with the reveal of Gerald's reprogramming of the Ark to destroy the planet; Eggman man reveals that he's a scientist due to his grandfather (this moment is an interesting one cause although he's an evil scientist he wrestles with the fact that his grandfather, one of the most intelligent people to ever live was about to destroy everything. I think its interesting that this bothers him cause outside of the want for the destruction of all; it's the fact that the man that inspired him to do good at one point in time fell to such depths that he wished for mass death. A man who seem incorruptible became corrupted (And then Tails is just looking at him like yup we saved the day with teamwork and friendship. Like little bro, dog's mind is weighing heavy right now)). This is one of the few moment's he'll admit it but he is the scientist he is today directly because of his grandfather. He has an admiration for all he's made and done, seeing his genious as unrivaled, a great man that's done great things and accomplished much.

After the events of SA2 Shadow was believed to have died stopping the fall of space colony ark, leaving a single inhibitor rings behind. Of course as we know he survived, but he didn't survive on his own. Shadow was saved by Eggman. Shadow is a member of the Robotnik family, maybe not by the usual means, but he is. They're estranged to eachother but still members of the same family (the uncle Eggman didn't know he had), I imagine Eggman wouldn't see it this way but his actions show otherwise. Remember Eggman saved Shadow, I don't think this is the case, but I'd love to believe that outside of the more selfish reasons to save Shadow (like cloning, or reprogramming him (Note that man still makes an android army of him so . . . ye)), he not only saved him but also nursed him back to health because he is a living representation of his grandfather's leagacy. His grandfather's last and greatest creation, a hero that'll defend the world even from himself. A being that was birthed for the purpose of being hope, someone designed in the image of a great savior. This is the type of thing that even if true Eggman would be too prideful to ever admit to. That he saved Shadow out of the same love and admiration he has for his grandfather and all his works, to see continue to exist even if they'd always oppose each other.

Shadow The Hedgehog

Shadow is a Robotnik, and Gerald is his father, and Maria is his big sister. If Black Doom gets to claim shadow as his offspring, then Gerald does too no question since he actually cared for him (maybe mother since he cultivated, grew, and programmed him (I say programmed cause he says it out right, he pre-programmed him)) (he does claim him, man calls him son, its wonderful, and makes things sadder). Shadow generations is a great game, Shadow is like the best character, Shadow generations is peak cause of what it does for his character. I said Shadow is a Robotnik and this game shows it the most cause we get to see Shadow directly interacting with Maira and Gerald, its cute and amazing to see him reunite with what is his family.

Shadow's Family Photo
This doesn't really need to be said but that's an aspect of why what happened on the Ark is so tragic he lost his family that day, and saw Maria die in front of him (I imagine that when he landed on earth that he lived Lone Wolf (the last level of Halo Reach where the object is to simply survive while being absolutely flooded with enemies) in rage over what's happened barely having processed it all as he gets swarmed by G.U.N.). After the tragedy that was space colony ark Gerald used Shadow to carry out his revenge against not only G.U.N. but humanity as a whole. Gerald altered his mind to do so, corrupting the memory of his last moments with Maria (you know, the only things he has of her left (to ruin my own point just for a moment, his memories aren't the only things he has of her, his hover shoes were designed by Maria for example, Gerald made them work). Like if he loses that then he has less of her) altered so he could carryout Gerald's desire rather than Maria's. I'm sure by the time Shadow generations takes place he's aware of this, yet he rushes towards the two of them with a quickness all the same. He even realizes they come from before the raid, and begins to wonder if he can save them, change history so they can live just a little longer. (I imagine that in the same way he knows that Gerald did that, that he also knows he did that while not being in the right state of mind, when he crumbled having lost everything).

To be continued with more consumption of Shadow Generations -Dec 20, 2025

Finished Shadow Generations -Jan 4, 2026

Ending sad though

It's as clear as glass that Shadow has a better view of family than Eggman.

In contrast to Eggman, Shadow cleary has a strong sense of family.

What's left of a family (Space Colony Ark)

I already glazed Gerald, again he is one of the smartest mind in the world, and during his time he was uncontested. Unlike his grandson, Gerald is a family man with two boys as we learn from his journal. And with a brillance so great that you're able to put your face on a space station, one so big that its effectively a satellite visible from the planet's surface; when you hear that your first grandchild has an incurable disease that guarantees a short life why should you accept that? (very Eggman coded) You are the smartest mind in the world but you're humble enought to not say it and to recognise that working with others is beneficial. Why should you not convince both your family and pull strings behind the scenes to allow you to take your grandchild up to the Ark for study? After all its a place of scientific persuit where some of the greatest minds have converged, if you can crack this then your grandchild will be able to live a full life. Alongside an untold number of people too.

From here of course begins the slow burn that is the tradgy of Space Colony Ark. With both the "blessing" of his family and the preperations made he takes Maria up to the Ark. The place that'd sadly be her resting place. (although I'm getting ahead of myself, I'd honestly believe that the only reason that G.U.N. and the at the time president allowed this is to have a form of control over him. As I'll get to Gerald shows himself to be rather difficult to deal with) Of coures while on the Ark Gerald's soul focus isn't on Maria, he's too busy simply managing the Ark but of course he isn't the only researcher and obviously he'd always find time for his grandchild. Managing the Ark though sees him busy trying to find funding for the Ark's various studies, this includes Maria's study. Her presence on the Ark is not a free one. If He wants to see her cured or simply continue her care he has to find the funds to do so. No one is supplying the funding themselves, which means, encourages, and pressures him to obtain funding from G.U.N. or even the preseident. Any funds left after the work is done is free game. Much of the Ark's initial funding came from G.U.N.; they're not interested in Maria's study but rather weapons research. Something that the Great Gerald Robotnik fights against to the best of his ability, but he does need their funding. To him the Ark is a place of scientific research for the preservation and benefit of life. In contrast thought for G.U.N. the Ark is an investment, one they hope to see a boon of returns on with so many of the age's greatest scientific minds present. (I have to ask, what did G.U.N. want with weapons? I know they're a more militaristic force, but who or what were they going to use these new weapons on? G.U.N. is an international organization its in the name Guardian Units of Nations did they just want weapons for weapons sake or cause they had something planned?) It gets to the point where Gerald goes out of his way to contact the president to rein in G.U.N., but this fails. Not only does this fail but the president asks Gerald to work towards immortality. Something he describes as a fool's earn, a perversion of life, nature, and the Ark's foundational purpose. These asks, demands don't just go away they sit with him like a devil in his ear. If he gives in he'll gain the funding he needs to see Maria's study through, but at the cost of doing the work of evil men.

All these pressures stress Gerald, he thows a bone to keep
